Purple Up to Honor Military Kids in April

April is designated as the Month of the Military Child, underscoring the important role military children play in the armed forces community. Sponsored by the Department of Defense Military Community and Family Policy, the Month of the Military Child is a time to applaud military families and their children for the daily sacrifices they make and the challenges they overcome.

Purple Up to Honor Military Kids in April

Kids of America’s Heroes are dedicated to helping, supporting and honoring military-connected children all year round. Across the US, communities and military bases step up to show their love for everything that Kids Of America's Heroes do to support their military parents. Wherever you are located, you can join in to show your own support for military children! Try these easy ideas on your own, with your community or through KOAH!

Give a Heroes Welcome at School

Make arriving to school extra special for Kids Of America's Heroes one morning in April. Set up a tunnel of teachers, parents and community members for military kids to run through on their way into the building! Cheer, give high fives and pass out treats as military-connected children arrive at school. To pull this off, you’ll need to coordinate with your school’s administration. Send an email or letter explaining what you’d like to do and a few ideal dates. Once you have permission, connect with other community and school groups. Reach out to the VFW, American Legion and the PTA as well as the local military base or School Liaison Officer (SLO).

Share Military Stories & Books

Connect with your local public library or reach out to a school librarian. Offer to volunteer in the library, curating a selection of military child-focused books. Set up a cool display near the circulation desk. Offer to host a free story time session or two. You could host one for military kids only, plus another one for every child! The Kids Of America's Heroes-exclusive meting is a great chance for kids to meet each other and make new friends. You could focus this session on overcoming obstacles unique to military life, like deployments or PCSing.

Send a KOAH Hug

No matter where you are, you can always send a Hug! KOAH Hugs send love and support to military kids who are handling a deployment. Having a small care package arrive at their home helps Kids Of America's Heroes feel better about what can be a tough time.

(KOAH needs help keeping up with the requests for Hugs from military kids! We’d love your support to keep helping military kids survive and thrive during deployment).

Help KOAH Help Kids Of America's Heroes

KOAH is constantly supporting military kids and military families. From unit events to a KOAH Hug, from advocating for changes in K-12 education, we are passionate about making life a little bit smoother for MilKids.

Here are a few suggestions on how your school can celebrate the Month of the Military Child. Plan now for how you can show your support for military children in your schools.

We’d love to count you among our supporters! Even if you don’t have a particular military child cause in mind, you can help fund our efforts to support the Kids of America’s Heroes at home and around the world.
